Homeschooling can be the perfect solution for a teenager who dislikes or is having problems at school. The first step to successfully homeschooling teenagers is understanding exactly why they do not want to attend traditional school.
The answer will lead you to the problem. If your teen wants to give homeschooling a try (and you are willing), the following tips will help you know how to homeschool your teen.
Ask your teen what he or she specifically likes and dislikes about school. Explore the answer. For example, if your teen says school is boring, find out why it is boring.
Ask your teen about possible social problems at school. Teens who do not feel liked or accepted may feel rejected and may have even been a victim of bullying.
If your teen still wants to be homeschooled, make an agreement with your teen to try homeschooling for a specific period. Include the rules for the teen going back to school if he or she does not follow through with homeschooling.
Let your teen know what you expect when it comes to homeschooling. Setting out your expectations in advance will help with self-motivation.
Before homeschooling your teen, check with your state laws on homeschooling. You must comply with state laws. In addition, you need to “officially” remove your teen from school. If your teen just stops showing up to school, he or she will be considered a drop out.
Make sure you comply with college acceptance guidelines in completing your teen's high school education. Many colleges have certain requirements for homeschoolers who do not have traditional school grades and records.
When starting homeschooling with your teen, begin with what interests your teen. He or she will be more motivated to learn when it is about something they want to learn. This can or cannot include academic subjects.
Explore different ways of teaching your teen. If your teen hates to read, try watching DVDs or “teach by doing.” Consider, letting your teen intern or get a part-time job in a field of interest.
If academic teaching is not going well, try teaching your teen academic lessons via things they may do in adult life. For example, measuring the square footage of each room in your home may help with a math lesson.
Enjoy this special time with your teen. Adulthood is just around the corner. Teach and talk to your teen about the important things in life. Share your thoughts of the past and dreams for their future.
