Homeschooling has advantages to both children and parents. Making the decision to educate your children at home can come from a number of reasons.
Some common reasons for homeschooling include:
Living in an undesirable public school district
Not having the money to pay for private school
Bullying
Violence
A parent's desire to control a child's social situations
A child not advancing in school
A child being held back by others
Families that must move constantly because of work
Children in show business
Parents believing they can teach their child better
The disadvantages of homeschooling include:
Many states must approve your homeschooling decision to homeschool your child. Sometimes a parent must undergo a certification process to educate a child at home. This may make some parents angry, but it is for the protection of the homeschooling child. Not everyone is qualified or possesses the knowledge for homeschooling. This process is to ensure every child receives an adequate education.
You must maintain school discipline. You must make time for school, no matter what else is going on in your day. Household chores and fun activities must wait. Homeschooling must come first.
Field trips are challenging. You must make time to visit the same interesting places that regular school kids visit. Museums and more can be costly when you do not qualify for the school group discount.
You must follow some sort of homeschooling curriculum so that your child is educated in all of the appropriate subjects. Many states provide a homeschooling curriculum for homeschoolers. There is also state testing for homeschoolers to consider and your child must pass those tests.
Homeschoolers do not always have the opportunities available to children attending regular school. These opportunities include sports, music, chorus, art, clubs, and more.
You must make sure your child participates in plenty of socialization with other children and with adults. Developing social skills should be a part of a child's education.
